INCOMING MISSILES—THE BATTLE’S NOT YOURS

Jahaziel said, “Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Listen, king Jehosophat. This is what the Lord says: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army, for the battle does not belong to you, but to God’. 2 Chronicles 20:15.

I was just a young lad back in October 1962 when the Cuban missile crisis broke.  Remember the story?  Russia had placed missiles in Cuba, just 90- miles from the Florida coast in response to American missiles in Italy and Turkey and Cuba’s request for assistance after an earlier American-back invasion, “The Bay of Pigs” had failed.  I had wondered if we were all going to die—my parents were glued to the radio. I knew it was something big.  The world held its breath, and waited, then sighed in relief.  Russia backed down.  God’s intervention?

Thousands of years before, King Jehosophat faced the same situation—“some people came and told Jehosophat, ‘a vast army is coming against you’ (2 Chronicles 2).  Jehosophat went immediately into prayer, gathering the children of Judah in one place.   Suddenly, at the back of the crowd, a voice stood out, Jahaziel’s–“then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jahaziel” (verse 15), with the famous proclamation, and a battle plan is hatched.  “After consulting the people, Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the Lord and to praise Him for the splendor of His holiness, as they went out the head of the army saying, ‘Give thanks to the Lord, for His love endures forever’. (vs. 21). The king had got his own praise team.

Sometimes an army of problems will assail and the missiles of finance, uncertainty, people, pain, heartbreak, sickness, work piled high will point your way, aimed at you.  That’s when you just stop, and fall on your knees and start singing, for “no weapon formed against you shall prosper, so “fear not, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord (Ex 14:13), so “be no afraid of them, for the Lord thy God is with thee”. (Deut.  20:1), and they that be with us, are more than they that be with them. Trust me, the missiles are always there, and that’s why you need the constant praise team, day in and day out.   At our school, we’re not just staying with chapel and worships; kids pile out in the hallways in the middle of the day to hold hands and to pray, for the incoming missiles are not to be taken for granted.  Missiles a-coming.  Lord, just open up my eyes today; open my eyes of faith and prayer and song, for the battle is the Lord’s. Share it up,  The Battle is not yours – Yolanda Adams

If you have ever felt lost in a cave of despair and discouragement, then this message is for you.  Sometimes, things happen; life doesn’t always work out; you may be recompensed evil for the good that you have done, or so you think,  but God has a way of using that evil to make it for good.   Listen to the music for today from the GAAA Concert Choir and the Oakwood University Aeolians at the end of this message.

“Cave Rescue”

By Sylvan A. Lashley

1 Kings 19:9—“And there he went into a cave, and spent the night in that place; and behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and He said to him, ‘what doest thou here, Elijah”?

The dramatic rescue of the Thai boys and teacher from a cave, 2.5 miles into the earth, riveted global attention to the cliff-hanging rescue details.  Having exultantly trekked into the cave for one purpose, an unexpected crisis developed.

Back in the day, Elijah had a similar experience.  He was on a high when he destroyed the prophets of Baal on an exultant holy mission, but a problem developed soon after when Jezebel threatened.  Elijah ran headlong into the wilderness, slept under a juniper tree, ate twice, and continued running for 40 days to a refuge in the deep caves of Mt. Horeb. It was here in the depth of suicidal despair that God calls out to him twice, with the rhetorical question, “What are you doing here Elijah”?  The first time around, Elijah repeats his exploits—God lets him vent (v. 9).  By the second time the same question comes around, Elijah has learnt to pause and listen for God’s still, small voice (v. 13).

You’ve been on some mission, at the height of seeming success when some shadow crosses your path, and you spirt sinks low.  You start running to find some defensive shelter, probably emotionally and psychologically.  It is when we are at our deepest depth of deadly and despicable despair, sunken into the cave of your own inequities, fears and tribulations, that God calls out, “what are you doing here my friend?” God calls us out to leave the cave, in a still small voice, and gives us a new lease on life.

As the Navy seals brought those Thai boys to the surface, so can God bring us out of the cave in times of stress.  He questions us, not because He needs answers, but for the purpose of our deep thought and reflection. Whereas at first he calls us from the back of the cave, He will always call again at the front of the cave.

Today, we ask the question, “What are you doing here in this corner sulking, feeling sorry for yourself?” Get up and go for God has blessed your efforts.  “Reverse your steps from where you have come, and I will give you a new mission, a new direction and a new spirit”.  So whether it is a committee or position or post-heroic depression, and you find yourself lodged in the caves of Horeb, “fret not thyself, but trust in the Lord, for He shall bring it to pass” and rescue us from that cave.  He is our mighty fortress.

Do It Quickly Because…

And after the sop (the bread dipped) Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, that thou doest, do quickly/ John 13:27

Has someone ever done you something and you felt like just “letting him/her have it”?  Most of us have, probably at some time.  What happens when people provoke your fine Christian spirit?  Do you just “roll over and die” or do you respond in like fashion? Oh well!

Jesus sat around the table with His team-members, the disciples. They had been with Him, walked with Him, battled the seas with Him, fed the five thousand, seen the miracles, and withstood the ridicule of the Pharisees.  Here was now a great opportunity for reflection, for bonding and sharing and humility at this Upper Room retreat.  Yet, all was not well.  In discipleship, something can happen.  It happened in heaven (Lucifer); it happened again in Eden (the serpent); it happened at the Last Supper (Judas) and you can bet it’s happening now too!  It’s part of the great controversy.  There’s always someone, thinking and ruminating on the verge of doubt, a quisling soul.  There is life before the sop, and life after the sop and the life before the sop determines the life after the sop.   Before the sop, there was a leaning, an indication which the treasury job (he carried the bag and dealt with the budget) hid, but the evidence was there, stark and clear—the concern of the sacrifice that Mary of Bethany made—“ this money could have been spent for better purpose”.  There was always an opportunity before the sop to change and to reform.  But “after the sop, Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus” that thou doest, do quickly” because…except that Jesus had little need to utter the word BECAUSE, since it was foretold what would happen.

“Judas, you have been with me all this time; I trusted you, cared for you, cherished you, and permitted you to keep the books, but you have been two-faced, so since you are plotting, ‘go ahead and do what you have to do, and do it quickly (for Satan has entered your heart)’. Jesus confidently declares, “go and do what you have to do” BECAUSE “no weapon formed against me shall prosper, BECAUSE “fret not thyself because of evildoers, BECAUSE “commit that way unto the Lord, and He shall direct thy paths, BECAUSE” rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him”.   God’s promises are always true and He will carry you through, for it is the life before the sop that determines the conduct after.  “Do it quickly, BECAUSE…no weapon formed against me shall prosper”, and my Father in heaven has prepared a way of protection.
